Hello Malenafans,
Malena has started her final phase and so far all is well. Hopefully it will continue to progress this way! There was one little curveball thrown at us last week. Of course we have been praying that her counts would go up, well last week they went up too high. We were told that it is nothing to worry about. It was just a side effect of the steroids she was taking the week before. She is right were she is suppose to be now.
Malena had a great Easter! The Bunny came and left some yummy treats and we celebrated at Grammy and Grandpa Blind’s house. She had many questions during church about where Jesus was and if Jesus was off the cross then why was he still on the crucifix that the altar servers were carrying around the church. I did my best to confuse her even more and then told her that Grandpa Mercurio will answer all her questions when he gets back from Florida. (Have fun with that Grandpa!)
We have decided to put our house up for sale! We are looking for a house in the village. We are trying to simplify things a little bit and think that it is time to find a single. Malena wants a purple house (not gonna happen), Jamie wants his own room (not gonna happen), Tony want to move in with his friend Ellie (hmmm….not gonna happen unless Patty and Scott make us a good offer), Mackenna wants horses (not gonna happen) Pete wants….well, we all know what Pete wants and that is NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! So needless to say this is going to be a stress free move!
Some of you may remember that Malena had her picture taken for what I said was the USA Today weekend edition this weekend (April15). Well it was USA Today photographers taking the pics for the USA Today Weekend Magazine that is inserted into some Sunday papers, not the USA Today. Of course it is not going to be in the Buffalo News but it will be in Grand Island’s paper as well as Olean’s and Niagara Falls. Now I was told that you can buy those papers at Wegmans and Tops. It is also being distributed nationwide so if you live out of the area maybe it will be in your local paper. I was told that she is definitely in it. It is an article about a 10 year old who has a big interest in trains. He is trying to have a train car designed for this Attica/Arcade railroad that is handicapped accessible as well as has an outdoor area that is shaded for kids with cancer so that they can be out of the sun when on high doses of meds. I think the picture is of Malena sticking her head out the window of a train with this boy. (She’s the bald one!) or she may be walking down a ramp to the train (She is wearing a hat). Anyway, if you see it please let us know what paper so that we can get a copy! Thanks!
Thanks for checking in!
Go Sabres!!
Love, Suzanne

Hello Everyone,
We really don’t have much to update on. Malena’s counts have continued to be too low to receive her next phase of treatment. We will get a blood draw tomorrow and hopefully she will be receiving chemo on Wednesday.
She is finally off all the antibiotics that we had to give her while her counts were REALLY low. They have gone up a little and we are hoping they continue to make their way up.
Last Friday the kids had a Camp Good Day’s event which they loved! The Camp Good Days Family really knows how to throw a party. Pete dropped them off at 6:15 and picked them up at 8:30 and he was able to have a couple hours to himself. I was lucky enough to go to Chicago for the weekend to play. So all in all, everyone had a nice weekend.
Thanks for checking in! We’ll let you know when she’s back on the treatments!
Love, Suzanne

Happy St. Patrick’s Day
We are still waiting for her counts to go up. She has not received treatments in a few weeks due to these low counts so we continue to pray and wait. Kind of frustrating but the doctors reassure us that this is normal especially with the type of treatment she has received. As soon as her counts are up we enter the maintenance phase which lasts for 20 months and we should know what to expect after awhile since she repeats the treatment every 8 weeks. We do know that she will be taking oral chemo everyday and that every 8 weeks she will receive a couple others at the hospital, one of those being the shot in the spine. She is also still on IV antibiotics which is fun for us! We will stop those…yes, as soon as her counts go up!
Tomorrow I am taking her and Tony back to the Attica/Arcade railroad. We were there last October when a very ambitious boy collected 10,000 cans and decided to use the money to take sick kids and their families on a train ride. USA Today is going to be taking a photo tomorrow for an insert that will be in the April 15 weekend edition and they asked if we would come back for the pic. Should be fun!
Believe it or not I have another cute story about Malena. The other day we were talking about Jesus and she asked if he was dead. I responded that on Easter he died but then he came back to life. Her response was, “Just like Frosty!” Yep, just like that! Great analogy!
We’ll keep you posted! Thanks for continuing to check up on her!
Love, McSuzanne
